It’s about having simple tools, but knowing how to use those tools the most effectively. Shogun 2 is about utilizing your troops strengths and pulling off tight maneuvers, as well as using your general to buff morale at critical points in the battle. I generally never liked having to protect a “hero” on the battlefield either.

Spells feel cool and powerful to cast, but it’s mostly instant gratification and often times it feels like a “get out of jail free card”. Personally, I think the spells are arcady and cheap (I don’t even really like off map artillery in Company of heroes tbh). Yeah, playing different styles changes up the battles a lot and can be fun, but relying on me to “make my own challenges” by “playing to the clans strength” is one way to do it, but the fact that the player has to get out of his way, to have fun, is not a sign of good battles. The battles are not trash, I still love shogun for what it is, but if we take off the nostalgia glasses and be honest, newer TW titles made good and interesting changes to battles and improved them, even though the have weaknesses as well.Īnd one last thing, in expectation of a comment like: “it’s your fault, if you only play the most powerful units and don’t switch up your army compositions based on your clans traits.” This results in me playing countless battles with the same army composition, against enemies with the exact same armies over and over again. Playing at higher difficulties just enhances this problem, as the most of these units are just not good enough to be bothered with. Between the clans isn’t a lot of difference as well: better bowmen and 2 special units? Crazy! Immediately feels like a new game! This limits the “can’t wait to see how this new guys obliterate my enemies”-feeling. This is due to the fact that the unit variety is incredibly small, there are only two tiers of units.

Once the lines are engaged, there is little to no time for grand strategic plays, except for a simple hammer n anvil.īalance is almost non-existence, heavy bow spam is way too good, for 90% of the game you only recruit one type of cav and I don’t have to mention Yari Ashigaru. But such memories where from Napoleon and Empire not shogun.
I too miss the good old days when a total war battle took 30-20 min. Pacing is off, because the build up to the fight takes a lot of time and brain (what I really like), but the actual clash is over within a blink (what I dislike). In my opinion they are badly paced, terribly balanced and way to repetitive. Up front: the campaign part of shogun 2 is still one of the best, i really miss units being able to exist without a general, the agent videos or naval warfare.īut the battles? The best? Hell no.
